Cool...folks to chat with again! Watering their garden was interesting, fun and rewarding vegetable wise...lots of lettuce, tomatoes, beets (oh the beets!). We had a good time with it as our own is a mess and all because we have spent all this trip in the house "doing things". I used to tend the garden at Dix and loved doing it, once in and growing it was not hard to maintain at all. Now though...the courtyard here is just overgrown with weeds and unpicked flowers and has a generally sad look about it though there ARE flowers amidst the gloom and the herbs are fine as they are. The weeds? Roundup anyone?

We are redoing the infamous Blue Room...the WC with the motto "It's Not A Turkish Toilet!". Not that I have anything much negative to say about any "facilities" when you really need them but a hole in the floor is just a bit much. At least we had a fine white ceramic toilet to use. First the ceiling, white to reflect the little light that enters naturally. Then a little bureau that will be the stand upon which the new sink will reside. A new faucet is ready to be installed...at $7.90 Euros it was the cheapest one there and it looks fine, nice crome, the valve is all bronze and while there is no fine ceramic seals...it will do. Kelly picked out a wild green, fushia (purple) and cream white wallpaper and bought a color matching fushia for the lower wainscotting area. No more Blue Room indeed! It will be just this side of shocking!

We (I) have used up the last dregs of Nansulate on the front walls of the parlor. 5 gallons are on the house's outside walls (mostly) and we will be ordering more sometime in the winter so we can have some handy after the new roof is installed.
How much? The roof is huge...another 5 gallons might be enough...maybe. The most interesting experimental use of Nansulate for me has been on my little gas oven. I've coated the sides of the thing with 3 coats as Industrial Nanotech has instructed and wow...what a difference in performance after about 3 weeks of curing.
I can get temperatures above 650 degrees...the limit of my temp measuring equipment was 650F so if it was higher I'll not know...yet! But the upside is that the leakage from the sides has been cut dramatically...enough that it reaches 450 degrees in 20 minutes where it used to take 50! The sides aren't cool..but they won't burn you either...which is another dramatic improvement. The refrigerators are equally happy about having their outsides coated in Nansumate Home Coat...they now are turned to their lowest setting and still are very, very cold inside, below 40 degrees...and the freezer is now at -45 degrees F! it was -25. All in all things have changed for nthe better, howmuch money it will wind up saving us is hard to say now as billing for electricity is a not so often occurance. I'll report though when I get some numbers.

Take care everybody!
Good health to you and yours!

Gout Rears Its Ugly Head...again.
Yes I am one of the many that experience gout attacks. I've been on the drug Colchicine for many years and use it episodically ( a word?). It is hard to describe the pain, this time affecting the right foot nearly in it's entirety. Walking is difficult but possible by keeping on the heel so I kind of roll side to side as I hobble along. The pain is 8-9 on a scale of 10 which MUST be the pain of childbirth so I cannot compare, nonetheless it is intense and includes a fire-like sensation, deep throbbing and twinges of shooting pains. Altogether awful. I am drinking water at an increased rate and have been taking my drug right along. It's been 5 days since I felt the first pangs. I'm now online looking for more info and perhaps a study I could participate in that might help in the long run.

I finished my upstairs sink faucet change out and tile job yesterday, it almost works...no leaks except thru the drain in the bottom of the basin as there wasn't enough room behind the basin for the lever that controls the opening and closing of the drain to operate, thus it sticks and must be re-shaped to allow it to work properly. I WAS going to do that today but frankly with this damned gout in that right foot I decline to climb the stairs right now. So maybe tomorrow. Meantime I sit and think nice thoughts about my left foot and how gout free it is THIS time.
___
Upon extensive Internet search using the search term "GOUT" I found a reference to a site and once there and with a bit of reading found the following information...Cherry Juice! What? Why? What's the basis? Read more, not a lot of info but enough chat there to convince me to try this...it's about Potassium in the diet, so here's something culled from the page:
Vegetables including broccoli, peas, lima beans, tomatoes, potatoes (especially their skins), sweet potatoes, and winter squashes are all good sources of potassium.
Fruits that contain significant sources of potassium include citrus fruits, cantaloupe, bananas, kiwi, prunes, and apricots. Dried apricots contain more potassium than fresh apricots.
Milk and yogurt, as well as nuts, are also excellent sources of potassium.
So armed with this info Kelly went off to the nearby grocery to hunt down some Cherry Juice and Bananas while I waited patiently, foot up on the couch for my first dosage. Tastes kinda berry like with a texture like a thin syrup, no, it's NOT concentrate! The banana was green as they are anymore but welcome if it was going to help this ever worsening condition. Two Tylenol were thrown in for good measure as well for it's anti-inflammatory function. Then every hour or so I drank another glass of the juice and ate a banana til I fell asleep about 10:30 last night. I woke at 2am (as usual???) to pee and drink more of the stuff and yes, I ate another banana as well. When I awoke this morning...l'viola! I'm better! Not "cured" but definitely can move my aching toes and standing is not nearly as painful, I'd say I was at a 4 -5 on the pain scale. That's real progress as that means I can get around well enough with weight on that foot to do the sink faucet removal and replacement job on Kelly's sink.

Ice on Laurel Creek and Other Matters
Ice, yes...ice on the surface of Laurel Creek. No waves, no ripples, no patterns of wind nor fish or the otters as they cross and weave thier ways. Just cold, dense and most of all, rare. This is, afterall California. Ice on open water here is virtually unknown. The last time I can remember such an event was about 1995 when on a boating trip on our vintage boat Zulu we ran into the ice sheet as it extended from Suisun out into Suisun Marsh just past the old boat ramp. It damaged her bow a bit but Zulu became an icebreaker that day as we plowed through the thin crust to dock at the dock behind our house. Today it was 27 degrees here, brrrr. But as we drank our coffee and suited up for the days work at the little house we watched as Audrey threw rocks skidding across the ice towards the opposite bank. Wonderful!

The little house proceeds, Audrey and Kelly spent the day painting the laundry room and the dining room to be (was a bedroom). I, wisely I might add, kept my mouth shut about the color selection. Med do NOT make such choices if they have a brain. It's one of lifes little lessons. Fabric colors either unless you are gay and prone to clothing design. It's just not wise. Creates conflict when it wasn't necessary.
Anyway, they chose a light yellwish cream color for the entire house interior. Nice, light and sunny. In a <1000 sq. ft house it will certainly help the place feel larger. The trip is a bright gloss white, which shows every bump and crevis and paint drip from the last hundred years. It looks very good. I got called into service doing the difficult-to-reach areas high up on the 10 foot ceilings. I like the painting chore, it's fairly mindless and the end result is always worth the effort...IF you got the colors right!
___
Israel's invasion of the Gaza strip is totally understandable given that Hamas apparently (a hot word I know) broke the cease fire some months ago with the multiple rocket barrages upon towns within 20 miles of northern Gaza. I'm no fan of the heavy handedness of the Israelis but what possibly does Hamas and thier Palestinian fellows expect after all these years and all these battles?! It's been proven...the Israelis kick ass to protect thier people and protect thier right to exist in Palestine. Those that don't like it can continue to harrass and harrang them but the outcome surely is understood by the world at large...Israel will strike back and the innocent and the guilty will shed blood. Nothing new is going on here this time. Hamas will be weakened by the killings of thier leaders and that is that.
New ones will sprout up and maybe, oh maybe another course except violence will be created between these war-like nations. Maybe. Nonetheless, while the world awaits another cease fire...pay attention to this now...Syria, Jordan, Iran, Lebanon, Egypt have NOT joined the battle. They know...they know what I've just said is true and they won't. I've watched the middle east and studied the action and reactions between the various societies over the many years since Israel's inception and often wonderred why the US didn't carve out a homeland for the jews in our country? Have Disney do a Jewish Epcot Center in the middle of the Mohave Desert with all the attributes of Jurusalem, 3/4 size of course, and be done with it. Give Palestine back to the Palestinians and walk away pleased. Know thins...it wouldn't work.
